Sol Voltaics Appoints Industry Veteran Arno Stassen as Director of Product Marketing

Sol Voltaics has named experienced solar technology leader Arno Stassen as their new Director of Product Marketing. Dr. Stassen, who most recently was Head of Business Development of the solar energy division at German technology group Heraeus, will oversee Sol Voltaics’ product marketing as the company nears commercialization of its highly anticipated solar nanowire technology.


Stassen has over 10 years of experience in the global solar energy industry. Prior to his role at Heraeus where he was instrumental in growing the company’s leadership in metallization of silicon and 3rd generation solar cells, Stassen was project leader and part of the consultancy team at the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN), where he led several large research and development programs in crystalline silicon solar cells. Dr Stassen also contributed towards the 2014 and 2015 International Technology Roadmap for Photovoltaic (ITRPV), the leading organisation in crafting the technology roadmap and driving future innovation in crystalline silicon PV.

Stassen’s appointment follows Sol Voltaics’ record $17 million series C funding round in May, the largest European solar technology funding round secured by a start-up in the past two years. Earlier this year, the company also announced successful alignment of gallium-arsenide nanowires in a thin film, a major technology breakthrough showing measurable progress towards Sol Voltaics’ ambition to commercialize its solar offering for module manufacturers.

Sol Voltaics Closes $17 Million in Financing Following Breakthrough in Nanowire Solar Cell Efficiency

Swedish Start-up to Accelerate Commercialization of Efficiency-Boosting Nanowire Films


Sol Voltaics has raised a record round of $17 million in new equity investment and grant funding to accelerate commercialization of its nanowire solar film tandem-layer technology.


The Series C funding round was led by new investor Riyadh Valley Company (RVC), the venture capital investment arm of King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Long-term investors Umoe, FAM, Industrifonden, and Nano Future Invest demonstrated their continuing commitment to Sol Voltaics by contributing to the $12.5 million in equity. In addition, the Swedish Energy Agency and the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program backed the company with over $4.5 million in additional grants.


The new investment will bolster Sol Voltaics’ efforts to bring its nanowire-based solar efficiency boosting film to market. The company recently announced a major technological breakthrough with the successful alignment of gallium-arsenide nanowires in a thin film. When integrated in a tandem-junction architecture on mainstream crystalline silicon panels, Sol Voltaics’ nanomaterials innovations will enable photovoltaic (PV) module efficiencies of greater than 27% — a 50% enhancement in energy generation compared to today’s solar panels.


In addition to the nanowire alignment breakthrough, Sol Voltaics has progressed through several generations of development of its Aerotaxy® technology over the past few quarters. This patented process, originating out of Lund University in Sweden, is the foundation for producing nanowire solar cells and films in a cost-effective manner, a key parameter in the commercialization process.

Apricum – The Cleantech Advisory acted as financial advisor to Sol Voltaics in the transaction. According to Apricum, the capital raise represents the largest solar-technology funding round in Europe over the past 18 months.


“To overcome the physical limits of current mainstream single-junction technology, the photovoltaic industry needs to find a low-cost dual-junction technology,” said Moritz Borgmann, partner at Apricum. “Sol Voltaics, with its drop-in product, provides a game-changing yet simple solution to this problem. The great investor interest underlines how compelling the technology is.”


RVC’s investment in Sol Voltaics offers another example of Saudi Arabia’s increasing interest in the renewable energy space as the Kingdom moves toward realizing its huge potential for solar energy.


The Saudi government recently unveiled the “Saudi Vision 2030” plan, a wide-ranging economic and social policy effort that sets an initial deployment target of 9.5 gigawatts of solar and other renewable energy sources by 2023 under the new “King Salman Renewable Energy Initiative”.

Sol Voltaics Announces Nanowire Breakthrough For Solar Energy; Has Potential to Boost Module Performance By More Than 50 Percent

In a major breakthrough for solar energy, Swedish advanced materials start-up Sol Voltaics AB has confirmed the successful alignment and orientation of nanowires in a thin film. The achievement represents the most significant technology milestone in solar nanowire manufacturing to date, paving the way for photovoltaic (PV) module efficiencies of 27% or more—a 50% boost in energy conversion efficiencies for today’s solar modules.


While showing highly promising characteristics in solar energy generation, nanowires are notoriously difficult to align due to their high aspect ratios and material characteristics. By controlling nanowire orientation and alignment at centimeter scale on standard-sized wafers, Sol Voltaics has taken a major step toward the commercial production of solar films for tandem solar PV modules.


“Today’s announcement marks a significant moment for both Sol Voltaics and the global solar energy industry,” said Erik Smith, CEO of Sol Voltaics. “Gallium arsenide (GaAs) nanowires have recently come to the forefront as holding great promise for boosting solar module efficiencies well beyond current levels. By aligning nanowires within a membrane, we’ve taken our greatest stride yet toward manufacturing solar nanowire films at the commercial scale. This will enable solar panel manufacturers to greatly enhance the energy-generating capability of their products.”


The latest milestone follows Sol Voltaics’ 2015 announcement that the Fraunhofer-ISE confirmed a world-record PV conversion efficiency of 15.3% for the company’s epitaxially grown GaAs nanowire solar cells. The cells were recently retested by Fraunhofer and showed little or no degradation nearly 18 months after the initial tests, reaffirming the technology’s performance reliability.


In addition to the nanowire alignment breakthrough, Sol Voltaics has progressed through several generations of development of its Aerotaxy® production technology. The patented process allows cost-effective III-V nanowire solar cell production via a continuous gas phase process.


“We have made several significant advancements over the past few quarters, and that momentum continues on several fronts,” added Smith. “Realistically, we have a few remaining hurdles to get over in order to get into commercialization but we’re very confident we can deliver a truly transformative energy solution, the kind of solution called for by the Breakthrough Energy Coalition, COP 21 summit, and other global efforts to combat climate change and create a clean energy economy.”

SAN FRANCISCO – March 17, 2015 – Sol Voltaics, providing advanced nano material technology for the solar industry, today announced that it has doubled the previously reported world-record for photovoltaic (PV) conversion efficiency using a gallium-arsenide (GaAs) nanowire array (NWA). As independently verified by Fraunhofer-ISE, Sol Voltaics has demonstrated a 1-sun conversion efficiency of 15.3% in a GaAs NWA solar cell, representing a significant milestone towards providing the solar industry with an efficiency boosting tandem film.


This is the highest efficiency reported to date in a III-V NWA solar cell, and twice the prior record for GaAs NWA technology. Control of the high density of surface states of native GaAs is essential for PV applications, and these results prove that the company has resolved this challenge in the growth of solar cell nanowires.

The Swedish Minister for Enterprise Annie Lööf visited Sol Voltaics on Friday May 9, 2014. The Minister for Enterprise was accompanied by the senior management at Lund University and Sol Voltaics management team. The Minister showed great interest in the company’s journey going from the fundamental science developed at Lund University, to becoming a company developing next generation technology for the PV industry.

The Minister was very impressed of the progress of the company using state of the art technology for the future good for the many people. Sol Voltaics is once again the proud recipients of the “33-list” award. It’s the two major Swedish magazines within business and technology Affärsvärlden and NyTeknik that together with their readers nominates several hundreds of companies. The list is not a ranking list - anyone on the list is a winner.

After the nomination period they take a thorough research before making the final list. The results were presented at a major gala event in Stockholm yesterday. The formal criteria for being on this list is pretty straight forward, the company is based on an innovation, maximum of seven years old, not publicly traded.  

Sol Voltaics was also the winner of the special price from the partner NyTeknik for Sol Voltaics recruitment efforts. The price is a price check of 70 000 SEK for the help in finding the best talents in Sweden to further developing the company.  

The companies on the list are all extremely impressing. Yesterday we had a great night getting together with all of them and to get to know the other companies. The Swedish scene of tech startups is very strong, being part of this community and to push each other for success is very exciting, said Erik Olsson Director of Business Development at Sol Voltaics.

At Thursday October 13, 2013 European Venture Contest-Energy (EVC) was held in Horsens, Denmark. Among the 30 presenting companies active in the field of renewable energy Sol Voltaics got the “BEST PRESENTATION AWARD” for a high quality presentation as evaluated by a panel of International Expert Reviewers.

Lars Samuelson, Lund University and CSO of Sol Voltaics, presented the results achieved with nanowire technology and the improvements in efficiency, that promise to make Xtl III-V cells cost-competitive with thin film. He also illustrated Sol Voltaics innovative production method (Aerotaxy™) that can be 50 to 1.000 times faster than the standard methods to produce nanowire arrays.

Sol Voltaics 41M SEK in a conditional loan from Swedish Energy Agency; Former REC CTO Erik Sauar Becomes Equity Investor

Sol Voltaics are today happy to announce that the Swedish Energy Agency, Sweden’s national authority for energy policy issues, has provided the company a state aid of $6.2 million (41M SEK) in the form of a conditional loan to further the commercial development of Solink and a demo production line of the Aerotaxy nanowire production process.

Sol Voltaics are also very happy to announce that Erik Sauar, who for more than 10 years served as the Chief Technology Officer and Senior VP at solar manufacturer Renewable Energy Corporation (REC) and a longtime leader in the European solar industry, has become an equity investor.

We are tremendously gratified by the support from the Swedish Energy Agency and Erik Sauar and we have two goals: to make solar more profitable for solar manufacturers and developers and to lower the price of solar energy for consumers, utilities and businesses. We look forward to demonstrating our technology in larger scale.

Professor Lars Samuelson - The first swede inducted into the Cleantech Scandinavia Hall of Fame!

The first night, Lars Samuelson, was inducted into the Scandinavian Cleantech Hall of Fame.  He is the fourth entrant to this honor joining Alf Bjorseth (founder of REC Solar and an investor and supporter of Sol Voltaics).  Lars was recognized for his significant contributions to Cleantech and for him being such an inspiration to so many. Especially called out is his relentless pursuit to commercialize science toward the good of the world. Congrats Lars!

The second night, Sol Voltaics won the best pitch award for Energy Efficiency.  We were up against 5 other strong presenting companies in our category.

We are of course very happy to the awards, but whats also meant a lot to us was to make a lot of new contacts and to see old frineds!

Lars Samuelson, CSO Sol Voltaics, awarded the 2013 Prize for Science by IUVSTA

The International Union for Vacuum Technique, Science and Applications – IUVSTA, awarded Lars Samuelson the 2013 Prize for Science. This prize is awarded only every third year, and carries a cash award as well as an invitation to give a plenary talk at the Society's tri-annual meeting, the IVC, which typically attracts 1500 - 2000 attendees and will take place in Paris this September. The citation reads:

“… for his groundbreaking and continuing scientific work on the mechanisms underlying epitaxial nanowire growth, enabling the bottom-up realization of radically new types of highly controlled nanostructures, as well as for the development of broad and important applications of nanowires in electronics, optoelectronics and life sciences”

Sol Voltaics in Science Magazine; “InP Nanowire Array Solar Cells Achieving 13.8% Efficiency by Exceeding the Ray Optics Limit.”


Photovoltaics based on nanowire arrays could reduce cost and materials consumption compared to planar devices but have exhibited low efficiency of light absorption and carrier collection. We fabricated a variety of millimeter-sized arrays of p-i-n doped InP nanowires and found that the nanowire diameter and the length of the top n-segment were critical for cell performance. Efficiencies up to 13.8% (comparable to the record planar InP cell) were achieved using resonant light trapping in 180-nanometer-diameter nanowires that only covered 12% of the surface. The share of sunlight converted into photocurrent (71%) was six times the limit in a simple ray optics description. Furthermore, the highest open circuit voltage of 0.906 volt exceeds that of its planar counterpart, despite about 30 times higher surface-to-volume ratio of the nanowire cell.

Sol Voltaics receives grant from the Swedish Energy Agency for “Nano wire-based solar cells for of cheap renewable energy”.


Project Manager Lars Samuelson, Lund Institute of Technology, The project aims to develop solar cells with high efficiency at reasonable production costs by using nanowires of III-V semiconductors. The project managed by Lund Institute of Technology in collaboration with Sol Voltaics. Lund Institute of Technology is granted 9,000,000 million over four years.
