To check solar panel polarity, you need a voltmeter or multimeter. First, you must turn off the power going into your DC circuit breaker box. Then, head outside and remove the covers protecting your PV panels’ wiring terminals.

Place one probe from your voltmeter onto the two-terminal leads connected to an individual PV module. If both probes read positive voltage, this side of the generator has positive charges, and negative charges are on the other side.

This voltage difference allows electric current to flow through wires from one end to another, producing electricity! In other words, you have correctly identified “positive” and “negative” polarity.

Now, refer back to step one and identify which wire corresponds to a positive voltage because now you need to attach that lead from your voltmeter onto a negative terminal on your DC fuse block.

However, if those aren’t available, here are the steps:

  1. First, cut off power going into the DC circuit breaker box by switching off the corresponding switch(es).
  2. Then remove covers protecting wiring terminals where leads from PV modules enter the house.
  3. Now attach the positive probe (red) onto the terminal with a red wire coming out and the negative probe (black) onto the other side with a black wire.

If both probes read positive voltage, this side of the generator has positive charges, and negative charges are on the other side!

What Happens if you hook up a solar panel backward?

If you hook up a solar panel backward, the system will not work correctly.

The output of the inverter can be affected because it cannot correctly detect whether or not there is enough electricity from the generator to power your home/whatever device is hooked up!

Are solar panel connectors standard?

Which wire is positive if both wires are black?
